Coming from Birlenbach, you can stop by the Schaumburg on the way to the Lahn.
Unfortunately, access to the building is not possible.
Below the Schaumburg Castle, a footpath leads to the right through the forest. (Difficult but feasible by bike) Here you pass a basalt wall. This also seems to have been used in the construction of Schaumburg Castle.
If you stay at the inhabited residential building of the Mother Meera Foundation, below the castle, on the asphalt road and drive left under a bridge covered with steel girders, you will pass a courtyard. Here is a pond which the Schaumburger Bach flows through.
Immediately behind the courtyard the road leads right into the valley.
A sign announces the fire salamander. I haven't seen any, but I believe that in this shady valley, in which the brook flows towards Lahn, surely a good place for amphibians. On the way down, you pass through a tunnel of approx. 10 m, which was driven into the promontory.
At some point the first houses announce Balduinstein.
Remains of a castle and all kinds of evidence of a medieval building make the settlement a place that stimulates the imagination.
If you follow the road down the valley, the stream flows from a viaduct into a stone-built basin opposite Balduinstein Castle.
There is also a lot to discover here, even slower than by bike, i.e. on foot.
At Balduinstein train station, a bridge over the Lahn leads to the Lahn Valley Cycle Path. On both sides of the Lahn you can find places to stop and spend the night.

Nice castle, but unfortunately not open to the public. However, it is worth to go up to take pictures. Great motive, even from afar.

Very nice, old castle above Balduinstein. Even if you can not visit, there is a parking lot, hiking trails, great views.

Schaumburg Castle near Balduinstein towers high above the Lahn River and looks back on over 900 years of history. Originally built in the 12th century as a castle belonging to the Counts of Schaumburg, it was later expanded into a magnificent palace and owned by important aristocratic families. For around ten years, the new owner has been restoring the complex with great effort – stone by stone, hall by hall. On Heritage Day, I was able to experience the castle from the inside for the first time: impressive rooms, ornate ceilings, old floors, and the visible progress of the restoration left a lasting impression. Particularly charming is the already completed Marstall Café, which today once again welcomes guests and exudes the charm of bygone times. I am looking forward to the planned opening in May 2026, when the castle museum will be open to the public – a cultural jewel on the Lahn River that combines history and the future.
