Catastrophes of the Middle Ages were the plague epidemics. The city was hit hardest in 1582. By erecting plague columns, the plague was to be halted. The 12.7 m high Trinity column was intended to protect the city. Franz Tollinger from Leitmeritz created this column from donations by the pharmacist Calderar. The Saaz sculptor Jan Karel Vetter completed it in 1753. Under a copper cross is a sculpture of the Holy Trinity.
