Disasters in the Middle Ages were plague epidemics. The city was hit hardest in 1582. Plague columns were erected to stop the plague. The 12.7 m high column of the Holy Trinity was intended to protect the city. Franz Tollinger from Litoměřice created this column using donations from the pharmacist Calderar. The Žatec sculptor Jan Karel Vetter completed it in 1753. A sculpture of the Holy Trinity is located under a copper cross.
