The Westermoor near Ahrenviölfeld has only been a nature reserve since 1989. Before that, the people from this area supplied themselves with peat as heating material. The bog emerged after the last ice age about 7000 years ago.

The Ahrenviölfelder Westermoor is a residual moor in the drainage area of the Arlau and Treene with a size of about 68 hectares. It was formed after the last ice age, about 7000 years ago. In the sandy soil under the moor layer, you can still find well-preserved stumps of oak and beech trees, which testify that this region was once very forested.
