    Bunker in the Todtenbruch

The western wall was built in the spring of 1940 in the Aachen - Northern Eifel area as two front lines.

    Western line: Rot-Lammersdorf-Simmerath

    Eastern line: Zweifall-Todtenbruch-Kallbrück

This line includes this bunker with two neighboring (363 and 365)

The 1st Batalion / 60 Infranty-Division was to take the Todtenbruch through the Gieschbach valley to the southeast and cut off the main road to Lammersdorf near Germeter from there. On September 20, 1944, the American troops reached the northwestern edge of the Todtenbruch. However, there were unexpected difficulties with the forested and swampy terrain. For the first time, they had to wage a forest struggle that was completely unfamiliar to them. The bunkers 363-365 in particular were fiercely contested.

On September 26, 1944, the death of Todten was largely in American hands.

Only after the war were the bunkers blown up by the Allies so that they could not gain military importance again.

Interesting way with many highlights. Bunker, Way Cross ... definitely worth a visit. Can be used by wheelchair and stroller.

Here in the transition from the Rureifel to the High Fens, the humid Atlantic air caused the formation of a raised bog over 9,000 years ago. In the 19th century man tried to transform this original natural landscape into a cultural landscape. Drainage ditches were dug to lower the water level and to plant spruce trees. The action was born out of necessity. There was a lack of wood in the Eifel. Almost every tree was cleared as firewood or for iron smelting. After the Second World War, the land was cleared again in order to gain agricultural land. Fortunately, however, a rethink soon set in. Since then, people and nature have been working together on the comeback of the moor by removing trees that are not in the area and closing the drainage ditches. Typical bog plants such as white cotton grass, bell heather or carnivorous sundew are now at home again in the Todtenbruch; Alders, birches and sedges are reclaiming the open spaces.
