Over 100 Soviet prisoners of war and concentration camp inmates of the "SIII" Ohrdruf camp, who were murdered by the fascists in April 1945, rest here.
At the end of World War II, Espenfeld had an extension of the Ohrdruf Forced Labor Camp, where prisoners were housed in tents and barracks. Opposite today's memorial was the barrack camp, the so-called "fixed camp".
