The market square of Veurne is the starting point for numerous walks and bike rides. This is also the ideal start for a city walk in Veurne. Wherever you look, you will see centuries-old and listed buildings around you, including the town hall, Spanish Pavilion and St. Nicholas Church.
But you can also see a beautiful piece of history in the middle of the large open square, namely the public pump from the mid-19th century. This monumental pump had to make way in 1868 to accommodate the increasing traffic on the Grote Markt. It was then given a place at the back of Sint-Denijsplein on Zuidstraat. In 1908 the pump moved a second time and was then partly restored. The crank with brass handle was installed at that time. When the Grote Markt was redeveloped in 1997, the pump was assigned its current location and thus returned to its original location.
