The museum displays folklore exhibits and farm implements. In addition, it documents the history of Hummelsbüttel, Wellingsbüttel and Poppenbüttel using photographs and graphics. The history of cargo shipping on the Alster and the Kleinbahn between Wohldorf and Rahlstedt will also be discussed.

Until 1957, the Alsterverein’s collectibles were deposited in different places for reasons of space – mostly with members. With the museum in the gatehouse, the association had the opportunity for the first time to show its collection to a larger public on a permanent basis. The Museum of Hamburg History supported the Alster Association in setting it up. Valuable advice also came from Dr. Alfred Rust, who became known through his excavations of sites of Stone Age reindeer hunters in the tunnel valley between Hamburg and Ahrensburg.

In the years that followed, scientific advice was repeatedly sought when it came to the correct classification and dating of exhibits. Later, the state archeology department set up a room with prehistoric finds.
The history of Wellingsbüttel, Hummelsbüttel and Poppenbüttel is currently being shown using old illustrations, drawings, photographs and maps. Farming tools and clothing are other important parts of the exhibition. A separate room is dedicated to the centuries-old history of barge shipping on the Oberalster as well as to the past of the former small railway between Wohldorf and Alt-Rahlstedt.

Among the prehistoric finds, the sectional models of two large burial mounds occupy a special place.
The voluntary museum management endeavors to acquire further exhibits of historical interest and to present them appropriately. The same applies to the library, whose holdings are supplemented with new acquisitions as required.
