The small chapel is carved directly into the rock. Impressive, considering what possibilities existed at the time. Very nice highlight on the wayside!

A popular option involves starting from the Matreier Tauernhaus, hiking to the chapel, continuing towards Innergschlöß and the Venedigerhaus, and then returning via a different path or the same scenic route. Many trails in the valley offer opportunities for varied loops.

Is the hike to Felsenkapelle Mariä suitable for beginner hikers?

Absolutely. The route to the Felsenkapelle Mariä is generally described as beautiful and not overly difficult. It follows a driveable road rather than a steep trail, making it accessible for beginner hikers, families, and those looking for a more leisurely walk amidst stunning alpine scenery.

What are the best times of day to visit Felsenkapelle Mariä to avoid crowds?

To experience the Felsenkapelle Mariä in a more tranquil setting and avoid larger crowds, it's often best to visit earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon, especially during peak season (summer). Weekdays generally see fewer visitors than weekends.

What are the conditions like for a winter hike to Felsenkapelle Mariä?

While the Gschlößtal is stunning in winter, conditions can be challenging. The area receives significant snowfall, and paths may be covered. Access might require snowshoes or skis, and it's crucial to check local weather and avalanche warnings before attempting a winter hike. The driveable road may not be cleared for vehicles.

The Gschlößtal valley is also known for its glacial landscape, with evidence of past glaciation visible in the valley's U-shape and surrounding rock formations.

What is the historical significance of the Felsenkapelle Mariä's unique construction?

The Felsenkapelle Mariä's construction within a rock formation is a testament to resilience and ingenuity. After the original chapel was twice destroyed by avalanches, it was rebuilt in 1870 by expanding a natural cave to form a protective stone vault.
