The underground station Baumwall is a good starting point to get to the Speicherstadt and HafenCity. Incidentally, the elevated railway station is evidence of ancient engineering.

The underground station Baumwall - since 2 December 2016 with the additional name "(Elbphilharmonie)" - is a stop of the Hamburg U3 underground line. It is located on the Baumwall, district of Hamburg-Neustadt, and is part of the viaduct at the port of Hamburg, a cultural monument of the city of Hamburg.

Construction of the underground station began in 1911. It was completed in 1912. The elevated train station was renovated and rebuilt until October 2010 as a future stop for the Elbphilharmonie for 4.5 million euros, following a design by Michael Blunck and Henning Rose. The structural design was carried out by WTM Engineers GmbH. Therefore, the U3 drove the underground station Baumwall from May 10 to October 3, 2010 only with a shuttle to St. Pauli. In addition, a viaduct at Hamburg's inland port had to be renewed on the elevated railway line.

The station with side platforms is located in the immediate vicinity of the Speicherstadt and the Elbphilharmonie. It is used by many tourists as access to this. The way to the Miniatur Wunderland also starts here and is signposted from the bus stop. The stop is barrier-free with two glass elevators on the sides. In addition, there is a direct transition to the building complex of the publisher Gruner + Jahr with a pedestrian bridge over the street Baumwall at the western exit of the station. This was added to the construction of the new publishing house in 1990.

From the subway station you have a perfect view of the harbor and the Elbphilharmonie.
