The current gate replaced the seventeenth-century escape door and was built in 1825 in the neoclassical style according to a design by Count Carlo Pilo Boyl, approved by King Carlo Felice of Savoy. The gate was named after Cristina in honor of Queen Maria Cristina, Carlo Felice's bride.
