The Upper Town is the oldest part of the city. Bregenz originated from here.

The Celts were already here as early as 1500 BC. Then came the Romans and later the Alemanni. Around 1200, the castle settlement, which is still visible today, was built by a count who granted small parcels of land here as hereditary fiefs. From 1450 onwards, the Habsburgs bought land here and combined some of the parcels.

The Martinsturm (St. Martin's Tower) is highly recommended. For just €3.50 admission, you not only enjoy a beautiful (protected) panoramic view and medieval stones, but you can also learn about the history of Bregenz.
