The Legend of the Devil's Throat in the Bode Valley

Many centuries ago, so the story goes in the Bode Valley, there was a narrow path that led through a dark crevice in the rock – today's Devil's Throat. Anyone wishing to pass through this dangerous passage had to pay a toll to the devil himself.

One day, a farmer from the nearby village came along this path with his cart full of wood. When he reached the dark chasm, a sinister figure confronted him. "You may pass," said the devil, "but first you must pay my toll."

The farmer, a stubborn and proud man, crossed his arms. "I won't give you a penny, even if the rocks fall on me!" The devil just smiled coldly, his eyes glowing like coals. "Then you shall pay the toll in another way."

That same night, it is said, a storm swept through the valley, and when the farmer awoke in the morning, all his daughters had disappeared without a trace. Only an echo, like mocking laughter, could be heard in the distance, coming from within the rock face.

Since then, people have believed that the devil still dwells deep within the Devil's Throat, surrounded by the shadows of the abducted girls, whose voices whisper in the wind between the rocks at night. Hikers report that on quiet evenings, one can hear faint weeping and the creaking of old cart wheels—and that no one should enter the gully uninvited.
