The Devil's Bridge signals a return to civilized terrain for people and the river. At this point you can look forward to a beer, a wine or home-style cooking in the nearby Königsruh inn.

A real highlight on the round and 😎photo motif

The Devil's Bridge, built in 1863, spans the raging Bode at one of the narrowest points in the Bode Valley. A few dozen meters further west upstream is the Bodekessel, which only became accessible to the general public after the bridge was built. This small but particularly loud waterfall soon became a popular tourist destination. The striking bridge structure also helped to make the path through the wild and romantic river valley attractive for hikers.

The section between the Jungfernbrücke near Thale and the Bodekessel is probably the most impressive part of the Bode Valley. The steeply rising cliffs and the unmistakable rushing of the water have always stimulated people's imagination. Numerous legends have their home here. For centuries, this part of the river valley was practically impassable.

On the hike along the Harz Witches' Trail through the lower Bode valley between Thale
and Treseburg you will inevitably pass the Devil's Bridge. If it weren't for the inscription with the image of the horse-footed man's head, you could almost mistake it for a completely normal bridge. In addition to its function as a crossing over the Bode, the structure is also a popular photo motif with lasting memory value.

The devil himself has not been seen on the bridge named after him for a long time. According to legend, it could only be built with the support of this prince of darkness. In return, the devil demanded the soul of the first person to cross the structure. Usually this was the builder himself. But the devil saw through the horse-footed man's plan and devised a ruse.
When he inaugurated the bridge, the builder drove a goat in front of him.
So the devil - once again - came away empty-handed. If you go hiking today, you have nothing to fear if you cross the Bode on the Devil's Bridge.
