It is one of the largest in Poland and Europe, built on the site of the former cemetery from 1825–1898. Erected in the years 1901–1927, according to the design of Konstanty Wojciechowski.
In 1925, the temple became the cathedral of the Częstochowa diocese, and since 1992 it has been the archcathedral and metropolitan church of the Częstochowa church province.
The façade of the basilica faces north; in front of it, there is John Paul II Square (previously Katedralny Square). Under the Chapel of Our Lady of Częstochowa there is a crypt of Częstochowa bishops.
