The village church in Alt Sammit is probably even older than the town church in Krakow am See. Its masonry is made of fieldstone. The church was formerly a village church, but also a castle church for the nearby castle. Furthermore, it was also a prayer church for merchants venturing through the Schwinzer Heide.

In 1636, a battle between the Swedes and the Imperial forces raged in Alt Sammit, during which the village, the castle, and the church were completely destroyed. This was the reason why almost all residents had to leave.

A ducal visitation in 1649 described Alt Sammit as "deserted." However, some time later, the lord of the manor returned and began rebuilding the village and the church in 1650. The castle, however, was never rebuilt. Instead, the lord of the manor built a palace. After the church was completed, the lord of the manor's wife died, making her the first woman to be buried in this church.

In 1945, the new castle was overcrowded with refugees, all suffering from typhus. As a result, the cemetery was filled with typhus victims.

In 1979/1980, the church collapsed due to structural damage. Over the next seven years, the village church was rebuilt by the cooperative, the municipality, and the parish. Because this collaboration was unusual, the project received an international Europa Nostra award in 1990.
