Right next to the museum begins the 20 km long Goethewanderweg (Ilmenau to Stützerbach).
The museum is located next to the town hall and the Marktbrunnen.

Hiking
Countess Sophie von Henneberg commissioned the construction of the Town Hall as her widow's residence in 1616. After the town fire of 1752, the building was reconstructed according to the plans of the Baroque architect Gottfried Heinrich Krohne, so that by 1756 it already offered offices for the town clerk and living quarters for the ducal family on the first floor. Goethe occupied the southeast corner room during his stays in Ilmenau.
