The Goddess Column is a commemorative monument, inaugurated on October 8, 1845.

The monument, which commemorates the heroism of the people of Lille during the Siege of Lille in 1792 by the Imperial Army, consists of a column and a statue of a woman at its top.

In her right hand, she holds a firebrand, used to light the fuses of the cannons, and with her left hand points to the inscription on the base, which reproduces the response of the mayor of Lille, François André-Bonte, refusing to surrender the besieged city to the Imperials on September 29, 1792.

The statue of the Goddess with the firebrand is a work by Théophile Bra, a sculptor from Douai. The monument's architect is Charles Benvignat. It acquired the popular name of Goddess Column shortly after its erection following a poem about it published locally. At its base, it is surrounded by a fountain basin, of more recent design.
