The market cross on Trier's main market square was erected around 958 by order of Archbishop Henry I of Trier. Archbishop Henry I established Trier's central market square in front of the western gate of the cathedral immunity around 958 as a demonstration of his market and coinage rights. Market rights had been granted to the city by King Otto I. Henry had the market cross erected during this period as a landmark of the market and as a symbol of market peace and the archbishop's power over the city.

The oldest part of the market cross is probably the Odenwald granite column, which is most likely of late Roman origin and, like the cathedral stone, dates back to the 4th century AD. A capital from the Carolingian period forms the transition to the cross top, which appears to date from the Ottonian period.
