A portcullis hangs in the roof structure of the bridge above the cars passing through

The covered wooden bridge that spans the Rhine between Diessenhofen and the German town of Gailingen is a sight in itself as a relic of ancient craftsmanship. But it also has something special inside. The current bridge, which has now been renovated twice, was completed in 1816 after its predecessor was burned down in 1799 by the Russians fleeing Napoleonic troops.

A few meters after the Diessenhofer bridge opening, a mighty portcullis from 1937 hangs in the rafters - largely unnoticed by passers-by. The steel grid was intended to prevent or at least hinder German invasion attempts during the Second World War as a precursor to blowing up a bridge and could be lowered and raised again using a steel cable with a crank at the bridge entrance.

Dissenhofen is the Swiss city that lies opposite Gailingen. It is known for the old wooden bridge that connects both places across the Rhine and also has a certain old town.

Diessenhofen is also a very good starting point for great bike tours. but the old "worth seeing wooden bridge" comes to Gailingen. From there it goes high over meadows and forests to a great bike area. Highly recommended.
