In today's geological natural monument "Plattenbruch am Hübel" sandstones from Rotliegend were formerly extracted. These panels were used as building material in the Thuringian Forest. On the road from Tabarz towards Brotterode over the Inselsberg there is a quarry on the left. Since 1870 very hard gangue rock, the so-called "Leuchtenburg rock", has been extracted and processed into fine chippings. The decades of mining resulted in large outcrops in the adjacent rock. It is thanks to these exposures that a large number of fossils could come to light. The break has thus become a fossil site of international importance.
