This Highlight is in a protected area
Please check local regulations for: Naturpark Sauerland-Rothaargebirge
Location: Altastenberg, Hochsauerlandkreis, Arnsberg District, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany
When the weather is good, you have a fantastic all-round view, especially from the Asten Tower, but when the weather is bad, you can't see your hand in front of your eyes because the summit is often covered in fog. The restaurant right on the summit plateau ensures your physical well-being. By the way, it is often incorrectly claimed that the Kahle Asten is the highest mountain in North Rhine-Westphalia, but the Langenberg, about ten kilometers to the northeast, is a few meters higher.

The tower itself isn't bad, but the view and the landscape around it are just great.

Lookout tower with restaurant. In clear weather, the climb to the tower is worthwhile.

In winter a great hiking destination to take a lap through the snow. However, very crowded and almost overcrowded during the holiday season.
The landscape is really recommended in every season.
Very busy during the holidays. Great view from the tower over the entire Sauerland.
Worth a trip in every season. Lots of people are here during the holidays.

The mountain heath on the Kahler Asten, with 841 m above sea level, the second highest elevation of the Rhenish Slate Mountains to the Langenberg (843 m above sea level), is the highest high heath on the roof of Westphalia. At the southern edge of the Hochheide, the only periodically water-bearing Lennequelle comes to light. With a height of 820 m above sea level, it is the highest source in north-western Germany.

At the summit of the Kahler Asten stands at 841 m height of the mountain inn Kahler Asten (hotel restaurant) affiliated branch tower, a lookout tower. From its platform, which lies at 862 m altitude, offers all-round visibility, especially in the Rothaargebirge. In very good visibility conditions, the view extends to Brocken, 163 km away, in the Harz Mountains (Saxony-Anhalt).

Especially when the heather is in bloom, the Bald Asten is a sea of flowers. There is also a hotel up here. At 841.9 meters, it is the third highest mountain in the Rothaargebirge after the Langenberg and Hegekopf and the second highest mountain in North Rhine-Westphalia after the Langenberg. The Lenne and Odeborn springs and a high heath are located on the mountain.

Beautiful hiking area .... and the cross on a summit is one of them.

Whether winter or summer - the bald knot always has its charms - even if you just drive to the restaurant here in the Astenturm to let your eyes wander into the distance with a cup of cappu or a glass of wine.
August 31, 2017
Third highest mountain in the Rothaargebirge and after the Langenberg the second highest mountain in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Bergheide Kahler Asten - The highest nature reserve in NRW.
February 23, 2018
The Bald Asten has its own magic. Although many visitors walk around the branch tower, one finds again and again a place, a bank, the heath landscape and the views to enjoy the surrounding area in peace.

"... the king of the Sauerland mountains - you have a fantastic all-round view of NRW's second highest mountain, the Kahler Asten. Spectacular panoramas, wherever you look.
On the summit, the bizarre landscape of the Hochheide invites to hiking and Nordic walking. In winter endless trails run through white snowfields. Stay at the Lennequelle and let nature work on you. On clear days you can see the Astenturm up to a hundred kilometers away - as far as the Großer Feldberg in the Taunus, the Wasserkuppe in the Rhön and the Brocken in the Harz mountains. "

Kahler Asten: Always worth a visit in the winter and also in the autumn because of the blueberries and the high heather Kahler Asten.
February 10, 2019
I have been up here all seasons. Even in fog without a view it is very mystical up here. But autumn is the most beautiful time in Hochheide for me
