At the Lennequelle you can refresh yourself in the summer. The two presented cuboids cleverly hide the drainage pipe from which the spring water comes.

  • A great winter hiking trail - also good to go at very low temperatures - always very well prepared by the Tourist Board Winterberg. If it gets too cold, you can warm yourself up at the bare branches in the restaurant in the tower.

  • Only ten meters below the Asten summit, the water gushes out of the mountain. From there, the Lenne flows through the Schmallenberger Sauerland and the Olpe district.

  • The Lenne is a 129.1 km long, orographically left, or southeast tributary of the Ruhr. With an average discharge of approx. 30 m³ / s, the Lenne is the richest in water and thus the most important tributary of the Ruhr. The Lenne rises at the Kahler Asten, about 300 m west of the 841.9 m high summit and the observation tower standing on it at an altitude of 823 m above sea level. NN. The educational trail Kahler Asten, which leads through the Hochheide, can easily be reached to the Lennequelle, as well as through the Lenntal, if you come from Westfeld and uphill through the beautiful Lennetal.

  • The Lennequelle lies in the northern part of the Rothaargebirge in the Westphalian Sauerland. It rises close to the summit of the 841.9 m high Kahler Asten and about 315 m west of the summit-looking lookout tower Astenturm at 825 m altitude. In the nature park Sauerland-Rothaargebirge it is located approximately 3.6 km (each as the crow flies) southwest of downtown Winterberg, in the district it is located, 1.6 km southeast of Altastenberg and 1.1 km north-northeast of Lenneplätze, both of which belong to Winterberg , The Lenne springs there initially steeply downhill towards Westfeld, a district of Schmallenberg.

  • The branch tower on the 842 meter high Kahlen Asten is the highest vantage point in Westphalia.
On the hilltop of the Kahler Asten near Winterberg, the branch tower towers into the Westphalian skies. The tower is equally monument and observation tower, holds the well-known weather station, the tower restaurant and a natural history exhibition.
The Astenturm is one of the most popular destinations around Winterberg in the Hochsauerland. Its location on the hilltop of the Kahler Asten is dominated by the landscape of the high heath, a protected landscape form with diverse flora and fauna. For those who would like to know more about it, the Museum of Natural History Münster maintains a branch office within the tower walls. An entertaining and impressive source of information is the "interactive table". This modern medium informs visitors about the hiking area, the heath trail and the winter sports around the branch tower.

  • This is where the Lenne begins your journey towards Hagen, where it flows into the Ruhr just before Lake Hengsteysee. The length of the journey is about 137 km. At the moment the Lenne spring is quite dry due to the warm summer.

  • The mountain heath on the Kahler Asten, with its 841 m above sea level the second highest elevation of the Rhenish Slate Mountains to the Langenberg (843 m above sea level), is the highest high heath on the roof of Westphalia. At the southern edge of the Hochheide, the only periodically water-bearing Lennequelle comes to light. With a height of 820 m above sea level, it is the highest source in north-western Germany.
West of Winterberg rises the flat ridge of the Bald Asten. The domed dome is occupied by a large dwarf shrub heath. It is interspersed with single trees and groups of trees, which contribute to the special beauty of this highest situated high heath of northwest Germany in the landscape.
On the edge of the hill, the heath on the summit merges over thicker shrubs and trees into crippled beech forests. The high mountain ash proportion reflects the harsh, cool-humid climatic conditions that have led to the special nature of the area. On the northeast slope of the mountain is a forest unused Bärlapp beech forest, which is already developing into the decay phase. Also on this "Kampfbuchen" the climatic disadvantage of the Kahler Asten is vividly clear.
In addition to the relevant dwarf shrub heaths transitions are formed to Borstgrasrasen. Hochheide, Borstgrasrasen and the formerly used as Niederwald beech forest together form an extraordinarily protected Biotopkomplex and are an impressive testimony of the historic forest pasture (Hude). For the Rothaargebirge the complete equipment of the mountain heaths of the Kahler Asten with the typical kind inventory is exemplary.
Not only because of its special topography and the associated views, but also because of its special natural features of the Kahle Asten is a heavily frequented attraction for those seeking relaxation. A natural history exhibition in the adjacent Astenturm and the nature trail created by the nature park meet the information needs of the numerous visitors.
A new way concept is to open the heath again new development possibilities. Once a year, the area is grazed with a flock of sheep.
