The Lenne is a 129.1 km long, orographically left, or southeast tributary of the Ruhr. With an average discharge of approx. 30 m³ / s, the Lenne is the richest in water and thus the most important tributary of the Ruhr. The Lenne rises at the Kahler Asten, about 300 m west of the 841.9 m high summit and the observation tower standing on it at an altitude of 823 m above sea level. NN. The educational trail Kahler Asten, which leads through the Hochheide, can easily be reached to the Lennequelle, as well as through the Lenntal, if you come from Westfeld and uphill through the beautiful Lennetal.

The Lennequelle lies in the northern part of the Rothaargebirge in the Westphalian Sauerland. It rises close to the summit of the 841.9 m high Kahler Asten and about 315 m west of the summit-looking lookout tower Astenturm at 825 m altitude. In the nature park Sauerland-Rothaargebirge it is located approximately 3.6 km (each as the crow flies) southwest of downtown Winterberg, in the district it is located, 1.6 km southeast of Altastenberg and 1.1 km north-northeast of Lenneplätze, both of which belong to Winterberg , The Lenne springs there initially steeply downhill towards Westfeld, a district of Schmallenberg.
