It took more than 20 years: The first plans for the development of the twelve-kilometer-long Elisabethgrodendeich date from 1995. The construction work began in 1998 with two sections. In 2001, the actual construction work to increase and strengthen the dike started, which was realized in eight sections. In September 2018, the construction work was completed - after 20 years of construction.
An information pavilion on the dike north of Friederiksiel shows the course of the work; the viewing platform on a small hill offers an impressive panorama over Groden, dike and Watt.
