The example of the Trautzberg "Fairy Tale" shows what has happened to the maars over the course of thousands of years. They gradually silt up due to the influx of sediment.

In order to gain additional agricultural land, the former wetland in the Trautzberger Maar was drained as part of the land consolidation at the beginning of the 1960s. This has now been reversed so that flora and fauna adapted to wet habitats can reconquer this area. The rewetting work included cutting off the drainage, building a small dam and securing the farm track that runs past. Time will tell if an open water surface will form in the long term, as it did before
the first drainage work around 1820/30, when the Maar was still used as a fish pond. The maar is part of the Wartgesberg nature reserve.
