The square is located on a former section of Lisbon's old city walls and today serves as a cultural and social center. At its center stands a statue of the 16th-century satirical poet António Ribeiro, affectionately known as Chiado, who gives the district its name.

The square is served by the Baixa-Chiado metro station, whose western exit is located on the square. Four escalators descend 45 meters to the station, providing convenient access between Lisbon's lower and upper towns.
