In the 19th century, the Rhinplate was a natural sandbank formed by the Elbe river, which lay in front of the entrance to the port of Glückstadt. The expansion of the Elbe and the associated construction of a guide dam around fifty years ago gave the approximately five-kilometer-long island its current shape. The original sandbank is now almost completely overgrown with reeds or even a floodplain forest, so that the view of the main shipping channel of the Elbe is blocked from Glückstadt. The entire island is still flooded at times.
