The small granite sacred monument that the hiker encounters at this spot has been located here for several centuries. The familiar cruciform shape is difficult to recognize because the typical side arms of the longitudinal beam are largely missing, and only a few fragments of this monument are present.

Bennett's Cross is a crooked granite crucifix situated beside the B3212. Whilst the origins of the cross are unknown, it has historically served as a boundary marker for the parishes of Chagford and North Bovey. The first reference to the cross is in 1702, but it was probably erected long before. One theory behind its origins is that 16th-century tin miner William Bennett, who held the tin rights in this area, erected the cross to mark his boundary. There have been attempts to steal the cross in recent times and, as such, it is fitted with a hidden microchip.
