The building includes the COMEDIA theater and the restaurant "Wagenhalle".
The home of the theater is the former fire station in the southern city of Cologne. The basic idea of the architect Bernd Oxen was to position the listed fire station and the new theater building equally. Through a joint of glass new building and monument are connected. In total, a space of 3,800 m² was created. The old facade of the fire station has been restored and restored. Next to the historic building is the new building, whose center is composed of two theaters: the Red Hall for almost 400 spectators and the Green Hall for 180 spectators. The two stages feature nearly 600 events a year, of which more than half are for children and adolescents. The rooms belonging to the halls - backstage, artists' dressing rooms and workshops - are also located in the new part of the building.
The old building accommodates on the ground floor a large-scale gastronomy, the "Comedia Wagenhalle". There are the former sliding poles and tiles on the walls have remained, which give the visitors references to the historical use of the fire station.
The upstairs rooms have been converted into rehearsal and classrooms, tailored to the special needs of working with children and adolescents. There are also offices and two artists' apartments for guest artists. The historic gymnasium in the attic has been restored to its original condition and serves as a rehearsal stage for the ensembles.
The landmark of the new Comedia Theater is the rebuilt dry and rising tower with a height of 23.7 meters. The architect Bernd Oxen comments: "Within the building ensemble, the tower has the special significance of setting a signal that can be seen from afar for the Children's Culture House. Not as a historical replica, but as a modern adaptation of the former dry and riser tower. "
