In honor of Engelbert Kaempfer you will find this monument on the wall in Lemgo. The monument was inaugurated in 1867. Engelbert Kaempfer was born in Lemgo in 1651. He studied philosophy and medicine. He then traveled to Persia, India and Japan as a research traveler. Through his trips to Asia, especially his trip to Japan, he laid one of the foundations for the relationship between Japan and Europe. In 1694 he returned from his travels and then worked as a personal physician for the Count zur Lippe in Detmold. He died in Lemgo in 1716 in the district of Lieme.
