During our visit to Lemgo, we were deeply impressed by the number and beauty of the half-timbered houses: magnificently built and restored!

This reminded us of nearby cities like Hamelin and Celle.

Lemgo was founded around 1190 by Prince Bernhard III of Lippe. Due to the city's favorable transport location, it was to become a long-distance trading and later Hanseatic city. In the historic old town, the city's long history can still be sensed in many corners: be it through the many stone and half-timbered houses in the Gothic and Renaissance style, the Junkerhaus or the Hexenhaus. This is a reminder of the witch hunts in Lemgo in the 16th and 17th centuries. While the medieval city center remained almost undamaged during the Second World War, the old buildings gradually began to decay in the 1970s.
