The most famous historic steam locomotive of the Wangerooge island railway is the tank locomotive DR 99 211, affectionately known locally as "Klärchen". The almost 100-year-old locomotive was built in 1929. [1, 2, 3]
After being exhibited for decades as a monument in front of the Old Lighthouse on Wangerooge, the locomotive was recovered by the German Railway Association (DEV) in October 2025 and transferred to the mainland. It is now located in the museum in Bruchhausen-Vilsen and is being extensively restored there so that it can eventually run under steam again.
