The church stands on the site of an 11th-century castle chapel dedicated to St. James and Christopher. Enlarged at the beginning of the 14th century, the chapel has belonged to the Cistercian Abbey of Königsbronn since 1348. From the middle of the 15th century to 1480/81, a new building was built as a Gothic pillar basilica, in which the Salem master builder Hans von Savoyen (Hans Saphoi) was involved. 1750/51 the church was baroque.
