In the west of the Algarve lies Lagos, a shining place. Also a real sun, sea and beach destination, but the coastal town is an exception to the rule. The authentic town owes this to the combination of a rich history, the hippie-like atmosphere and the dazzling beaches within walking distance. The former capital of the Algarve has an interesting history and a mix of different architectural styles. The Moors also played an important role in this from the 8th century onwards. They ruled Lagos for a long time, which they called Zawaia. In Arabic, this means 'the lake'.
