The city walls of Lagos, built under the reigns of Manuel I, João III and Filipe I, surrounded the entire city to protect it from pirates and enemy fleets. They were restored in 1960 to mark the 500th anniversary of the death of Henry the Navigator.
Due to their state of preservation and their length, they are one of the most important city walls in the Algarve. Particularly impressive are the bastions and gates (de Santa Maria, da Praça de Armas, da Conceição, da Alcaria or das Freiras, da Porta dos Quartos, de Santo Amaro or do Paiol, de São Francisco and da Torre do Trem), which offer beautiful views of the city.
