After the part of Küstrin east of the Oder (old town/fortress and new town) was ceded to the Polish state by the Allies as part of the Potsdam Agreement of August 1945, the ruins of the old town fell more and more into disrepair. At the end of the 1960s they were stripped down to the basement and became a restricted area. In 1994 the reconstruction and partial reconstruction of this part of the city began.
