Hiking

The statue was created in 2003 by the sculptors Andreas Krämmer and Holger Lassen and commemorates Alexandrine of Prussia (1803–1892), who became Grand Duchess of Mecklenburg-Schwerin through marriage. Since then, the ornate bronze figure riding a horse dominated the image of Alexandrinenplatz – until May 12, 2024, when it was severely damaged in a tragic traffic accident. A vehicle drove at high speed across the roundabout, knocking the statue off its pedestal and causing significant damage. The public's sympathy was immense – as was the determination to bring Alexandrine back.
