The Main Mining Authority is located in the historic building of the former mining administration, from which silver and gold mines in the region were managed for centuries. The institution was one of the most important mining authorities of the former Kingdom of Hungary.
In Banská Štiavnica, modern methods of mining and mine drainage were developed, and decisions regarding mining techniques influenced the operation of many mines in Central Europe. The activity of the famous Mining Academy, founded in 1762 – one of the first technical universities in the world – was also associated with the authority.
