Pekela originated from Groningen. A collaboration between the city of Groningen and private individuals (Feiko Clock) ensured that peat extraction was tackled on a large scale relatively early (17th century). This church is also being built in that period (from the city of Groningen).

With the reclamation of the peat colonies around 1600, the village of Oude Pekela was founded. Shortly thereafter, between 1683 and 1685, a simple hall church was built, financed by the city of Groningen, which also became the church's owner.
