The last remaining remnant of the outer medieval city fortifications is the Flurerturm (a round tower with a conical roof) on Scheibenstraße, originally dating from 1575. When a clear line of fire was needed during the siege of the Thirty Years' War, the tower, then still called the Karlsturm (Charles Tower), was demolished along with the entire suburban wall. It was rebuilt in 1694 and given its current name because it was inhabited by the Flurer (a local resident).
