During the early years of the County of Katzenelnbogen, the castle served as its center and gave its name to the dynasty.
The protected area includes the palace with its characteristic corner towers, the enclosure on the rocky plateau, within which are also the remains of now-destroyed buildings, and the late Gothic gate tower.
The former chapel was demolished in 1794.
