Why this monument? Here's some historical context:

On May 12, 1525, between Goldberg (now Sindelfingen) and Galgenberg (now Böblingen), at least 10,000 rebellious peasants confronted approximately 8,000 soldiers of the Swabian League.

These soldiers were supposed to restore the peace that the insurgents (with their "UFFRUR") had broken throughout the country.

It was the final chapter of the Peasants' War in Württemberg, which would culminate here – in Böblingen.

Prior to this, the insurgents had managed to capture almost the entire duchy within three weeks. With their letters of complaint, they demanded religious and social reforms, an end to numerous grievances, and even more: With the abolition of serfdom, they demanded an end to a life largely determined by others. They replaced the government, which was powerless to act and waited for the Swabian League, which would restore their power. Almost every village and town in the Württemberg region was affected by the uprising.
