The Kromme Nol storm surge barrier was constructed because of the high water periods in 1993 and 1995. It protects the Land van Heusden & Altena and the Bommelerwaard against flooding. This storm surge barrier is the only one not managed by Rijkswaterstaat, but by the Rivierenland Water Board. The barrier, built in 2001, has 2 towers, between which a movable slide hangs. The slide is 50 m wide, 9 m high and weighs 350 tons. At an expected water level of 3.50 m above NAP, the barrier will be closed. Ships cannot pass. The provincial road N831 lies across the Kromme Nolkering.
