The Via Flaminia Militare is an ancient Roman road that connects Bologna to Arezzo and was built, as documented by Titus Livius in 187 BC, by order of the consul Caius Flaminius. The construction followed the footsteps of a route already traveled in the past by the Etruscans, used for trans-Apennine trade.

The purpose for which the Via Flaminia Militare was paved was not only to expand the Roman road network. The objective was rather to build a wide and well-structured road that would facilitate the movement of armies crossing the Apennines without too much difficulty.

The Via Flaminia Militare was progressively abandoned until it was forgotten due to the loss of the strategic role it had in Roman times. The road does not even appear in the Tavola Peutingeriana: it is an ancient Roman map that showed the military roads of the Roman Empire. This suggests that it had mostly local importance. In 1997, Franco Santi and Cesare Agostini, both archaeologists, studied the existence of this road in depth and began looking for it. After two years of intense research, in August 1979 they uncovered a stretch of paving hidden under foliage. This is a slab of rock that was usually used to build roads in Roman times. This discovery occurred near Monte Bastione, not far from the Futa Pass.

After this first discovery, other perfectly preserved stretches of the Via Flaminia Militare were identified. After thirty years of research, the two archaeologists from Bologna managed to accurately outline the entire route that connected the capital of Emilia Romagna with the city of Arezzo in Tuscany.

Along the Via degli Dei (Way of the Gods), you'll find the remains of the Flaminia Militare, an ancient Roman road built in 187 BC to connect Bologna to Arezzo. Hidden for centuries, it was rediscovered in the 1970s by two passionate hikers. Today, well-preserved sections of the original pavement can still be seen, nestled in the Apennine woods. Walking along it means traversing a true piece of history, on a journey that combines nature, archaeology, and memory.
