Usedom's Achterwasser is a significant lagoon stretching west of the island of Usedom along the Peenestrom. It forms the transition between the Baltic Sea and the mainland and is separated from the open sea by narrow strips of land, such as the Gnitz peninsula and the Loddiner Höft. This unique location makes the Achterwasser a central feature of Usedom's landscape. It covers an area of approximately 130 square kilometers and is surrounded by numerous small bays, islands, and peninsulas.
