From 1559 to 1582, he served as Archbishop of Braga. Bishop Bartolomeu dos Mártires is considered a model of goodness and was declared venerable by Pope Gregory XVI in 1845 and beatified by John Paul II in 2001. The bronze statue, designed by the sculptor Hélder Carvalho, depicts him with a Bible and crosier.
