The predecessor building was first mentioned in 530 and had to be demolished because of structural damage in 1807. After a council decision in 1825, the church was built from 1826 to 1838 in the Classicist style by the architect Achille Serra and consecrated in 1855 by Bishop Agostinucci Crispino. The construction costs amounted to 40,150 scudi and 76 baiocchi. The church was built in 1926 by Pope Pius XI. raised to the basilica minor. On August 29, 1982, the basilica was visited by John Paul II, who blessed the relics and the church.
