In 1240 Prince Wizlaw I ceded the area to Stralsund and the church village belonged to the Hanseatic city until the 17th century. Around 1325 the people of Stralsund had a chapel built here. At the beginning of the 15th century it was decided to build a brick church with a four-bay nave and two-bay raised choir.
The striking tower with a wooden bell house and octagonal dome was changed in 1692, collapsed in 1803 after a storm damage and received its present shape in 1913, it is vaulted in the basement. Today's painting of the church also dates from around 1913, with medieval wall paintings being uncovered.
Originally, the nave and choir were roofed flat. In 1737 the nave was given a barrel vault and the choir was given the suspended beam ceiling.
The furnishings include a renaissance pulpit from 1667, the baroque altar from the Stralsund workshop of Michel Müller (1746), the Grüneberg organ from 1913, as well as the box stalls. The oldest property is the medieval baptismal font made of Swedish limestone with arched arcades on the dome from the 14th century. Four votive ships remind of the maritime tradition of the ferry location.
Two bells hang in the tower; the bronze bell was cast by Hans Thurmann in Stralsund in 1695.
The church is surrounded by a cemetery. A new cemetery with a small mourning hall is located at the entrance to the village. Outside the churchyard on the north-western edge is the war memorial for the fallen of the First World War.

          St. Nicholas Church in Altefähr
Altefähr has been the traditional landing place for Stralsund ferries since the 13th century. In 1325, a chapel "opposite the city of Stralsund" was first mentioned in documents. Unfortunately, no remains of this building have survived.
The oldest parts of today's brick church date from the 15th century. The tower was altered in 1692.
It collapsed in the upper third in 1803 and was given its current shape in 1913.
The older furnishings of the church are particularly noteworthy. The baptismal font made of Swedish limestone - which was certainly already in the chapel - was made in the 14th century. Some elements of a carved altar on the north wall from around 1500 are still preserved. The bronze bell, cast in 1595, bears an inscription, and the Renaissance pulpit made of oak and pine dates from 1667.
The church has ship models that are reminiscent of sailing and ferry travel.
