The River Kwai Bridge is a famous historic bridge in Kanchanaburi, Thailand. It was built during World War II by Allied prisoners of war as part of the so-called "Death Railway" to connect Japanese forces with Burma (now Myanmar). Today, the bridge is a significant monument and popular tourist attraction commemorating the prisoners' hard work and suffering.

In the humid tropical climate, deep in the jungle, more than 60,000 prisoners of war – primarily British and Australians from the battle for Singapore – toiled alongside 180,000 Asian forced laborers. They wrested a route from the rainforest, where rails were hastily laid to provide the Japanese army with a rapid supply line. More than 12,000 prisoners of war and probably 85,000 forced laborers – nearly 100,000 people – died in this tropical hell.
