South of Cuxhaven is the coastal heath, a large heath area directly on the North Sea. The coastal heath extends around the holiday resort of Sahlenburg. The largest part is south of Sahlenburg and is marked as a nature reserve. The area was also used by the Bundeswehr in the past and there is now a lot of untouched nature. In part, remains of the former military use can still be seen. These include the Feldherrenhügel and the Panzerwaschtrassen in the adjacent forest.
