A modest fell

enjoying the company of loftier surrounding ridgelines, Troutbeck Tongue's summit feels wilder and more remote than it truly is. Drivers

northbound on the Kirkstone Pass won’t fail to notice the fell's gentle whaleback

shape, nestled in the glacially carved valley between the southern limbs of

Caudale Moor and the superb Ill Bell ridge.

A remote and wild

feeling fell that rewards with atmospheric views

Troutbeck Tongue is a 1,194-foot (364 m) Wainwright fell in the Far Eastern Lake District and it will forever hold a special place in my heart as number 214 of 214 of my second Wainwright round. It's nestled in a bowl surrounded by bigger fells and the summit is a grassy knoll. Troutbeck Tongue has views to the western side of the Kentmere Horseshoe and I love the view down to Windermere and the Troutbeck valley.

Parking is limited at start so best arrive early, great route, a little flooded in places due to heavy rain earlier in the week, plenty of space to detour and find a path, highly recommend this route. Remember to take food and drink for the duration..
