enjoying the company of loftier surrounding ridgelines, Troutbeck Tongue's summit feels wilder and more remote than it truly is. Drivers
northbound on the Kirkstone Pass won’t fail to notice the fell's gentle whaleback
shape, nestled in the glacially carved valley between the southern limbs of
Caudale Moor and the superb Ill Bell ridge.
A remote and wild
feeling fell that rewards with atmospheric views
Sometimes simply
referred to as ‘the Tongue’, this is a fell that, like Haystacks or Yewbarrow,
benefits from the sense of its higher neighbours glaring down upon it, giving
you the sense of truly being in the mountains. Although its architecture
is not as interesting as the aforementioned fells, hikes to Troutbeck Tongue
reward in their own way.
Some of the finest
walks to Troutbeck Tongue start in the south and approach the fell along the
valley it’s named after. However, any approach is peaceful in this quieter
corner of Lakeland. It’s possible to do a full traverse of the Tongue; the path
up its northern side is gradual but can be boggy, while the path up its steep,
rockier southern nose is more strenuous.
The view from the
summit is not extensive, due to the surrounding ridgelines. Perhaps the best
aspect is to the south where Windermere stretches away towards the horizon.
Walks to Troutbeck Tongue are especially fine in winter when the higher fells rest
under a dusting of snow.
